Lead climbing is a style of rock climbing where the climber attaches their rope to fixed bolts or removable gear as they ascend from the ground up. Unlike top-roping, the rope isn't already anchored above them—it trails below, and the climber's last clipped point is their only protection in a fall.
This creates higher risk. Because the climber must pull up slack to clip each piece of protection, a fall means dropping at least twice the distance to their last clip. This demands strong technique, good decision-making, and trust in your gear.
The belayer also plays a crucial role, managing slack carefully to protect the climber without hindering their movement. Lead climbing is more physically and mentally challenging than top-roping, but it's the standard for sport climbing and trad climbing, offering a truer sense of progression and adventure.
