Top Rope

Top rope climbing is a style of rock climbing where the rope runs from the climber’s harness, up to a secure anchor at the top of the climb, and back down to a belayer on the ground. Because the rope is anchored overhead, if the climber falls or lets go, they will only drop a few inches before the rope catches them. This makes it the safest and most beginner-friendly form of roped climbing.

Unlike lead climbing, the climber does not clip the rope into the wall as they go up. The rope is already in place, so the climber can focus entirely on their footwork, balance, and technique rather than worrying about gear placement or taking big falls. Meanwhile, the belayer on the ground manages the slack and locks the rope instantly if the climber slips.

You will find top rope climbing at almost every indoor climbing gym, as well as at many outdoor crags where you can hike to the top to set up the anchors. It is an excellent tool for building endurance, practicing difficult moves repeatedly, and introducing new climbers to the sport. The main downsides are that you need easy access to the top of the cliff to set it up, and it lacks the intense mental adrenaline of lead climbing—but for pure movement practice and safety, nothing beats it.
